The Role of AI and Digital Technology in Conveyancing

AI and digital technology are changing the way conveyancing transactions are managed. While I do not believe technology will replace the role of the conveyancer (at least not during my lifetime!), it can be a useful tool for reducing administration and improving efficiency.

Modern systems can automate file workflows, generate tasks and reminders and pre-populate documents, which help provide greater visibility on the progress of a matter. Many platforms also integrate with case management systems, allowing information to be pulled between the systems, reducing the need for repetitive data entry within legal documents.

Mobile apps are another important development as clients can complete forms, provide identification, upload documents and communicate with their conveyancer digitally rather than relying entirely on email and paper correspondence. This can make the transaction more convenient for clients while giving firms a more structured way of collecting and managing important information.

I believe AI should be viewed as an ‘assistant’ rather than a replacement for professional expertise. Conveyancing involves legal interpretation, risk assessment and experience. AI systems should be used strategically to help improve accuracy, communication and the overall client experience.

It is interesting to see how the use of AI and digital technology has changed over the last 10 years and will be even more interesting to see how it develops in the future.
