My week at Thomas Flavell & Sons

by Megan Toon 25th July 2025

After my tour and introductions, I was assigned tasks to complete which included learning about the role of a legal secretary. I was even able to have a go at answering some phone calls, which was both challenging and rewarding.  As well as this, I spent the majority of my time working at the front desk. I helped with completing post related administrative tasks such as scanning through the post and distributing it to the appropriate fee earner.

One of the small but surprisingly significant responsibilities I took on during my placement was answering the door. By doing this I found the importance of greeting clients and making them feel welcome. I realised the difference first impressions make in the professional working environment.

Towards the end of my week, I was privileged to have joined in on a meeting regarding the interior design of the workspace. This gave me a great insight into the need for a balance between professionalism and comfort when creating an effective working environment. This experience was definitely one of the highlights of my work experience as it was eye-opening and informative. I achieved a better understanding that a workspace should be a place for productivity but also a welcoming environment where a sense of community and belonging is fostered. Thomas Flavell embodies this!

Throughout the week, I also noticed how essential teamwork and communication are in a legal office. Every task, whether big or small, was part of a bigger picture, and it was inspiring to see how smoothly things operated when everyone worked together.

I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent at Thomas Flavell & Sons this week, and for the support, kindness and guidance I received throughout my placement and the glimpse into the legal world it gave to me.
