My week’s work experience in the Hinckley Office

by Ellie Lambert 30th July 2024

I am a Law LLB student at The University of Leicester. Like many law students, I wanted to make the most of my summer holidays and get some hands-on experience. I was very excited to find out that Nicola Starbuck (Family Solicitor at the Hinckley office) had a list of work for me to do! I am yet to study family law, so I was apprehensive about how useful I would be. Nicola and Julie were so attentive to answering my questions. All of the staff were welcoming and friendly from the minute I walked in on Monday morning!

One thing that really stood out was how organised my placement was. I was allocated a desk and PC. I received training on the case management system and was then allocated a list of work to do. I did a variety of tasks such as drafting a consent order, filling out a D11 form, drafting a separation agreement and drafting briefs to Counsel. Each task gave me a new skill, which I had not learnt at University.

Despite her huge workload, Nicola took her time to go though every bit of work I did and give me really detailed feedback, which is really useful for the future. She taught me a lot about law in practice and how to apply knowledge to a real-life situation.

Before my week at TFS, I was on the fence about the type of law I wanted to focus on in the future. Now, I am certain that Family Law is for me. My week at TFS has made me even more excited about my future career prospects.
