Stepping Into the World of Marketing: My Work Experience Journey

by Ella Worrall 4th July 2025

This past week, I had the fantastic opportunity to complete a work experience placement in the marketing department at Thomas Flavell & Sons, based in their Leamington Spa office. As someone interested in marketing, I was excited to gain an insight into how a professional legal firm handles branding, communication, and client engagement. It turned out to be a week full of learning, creativity, and hands-on experience.

One of my first tasks was helping to publish content to the company’s website. This involved working with the content management system to update pages, check for formatting, and make sure everything was clear and professional. It was fascinating to see how much thought goes into even the smallest details - every image, word, and layout choice contributes to the firm's image and how it connects with clients.

Next, I worked on creating social media posts to promote the firm’s services and events. I got to explore different platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram, and think about the tone, messaging, and visual style that best suits Thomas Flavell’s brand. From writing captions to choosing the right images, I saw how important it is to create content that’s engaging, informative, and consistent. This part of the experience showed me how creative marketing can be, especially when you're trying to communicate something professional in a way that’s still interesting and eye-catching.

A highlight of the week was helping to set up for the Wellbeing Breakfast Networking Event hosted at the office, which included plenty of delicious food thanks to Cythnia from Café Desa! It was great to be part of something that brought people together in a relaxed and welcoming environment. I helped prepare the space, set up materials, and made sure everything ran smoothly. It was a chance to see marketing from an events perspective - how atmosphere, hospitality, and small details contribute to the overall brand experience.

This week gave me a much clearer idea of what marketing looks like in a professional setting. I developed practical skills, gained confidence working in a team, and learned about the importance of clear communication and attention to detail. Most importantly, I got a sense of how marketing fits into the bigger picture of a company’s success.

I’m really grateful to everyone at Thomas Flavell & Sons for being so welcoming and supportive throughout the week. It was an inspiring experience, and it’s definitely strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in marketing.

Thank you to all of the TFS team!
