Freya's Week in Conveyancing: Gaining First-Hand Legal Experience

This week I had the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the conveyancing department. It is always daunting walking into an unfamiliar office, however, on my first day I was greeted with warmth and kindness by everyone. Matthew Thom, one of the Directors, did not waste any time and let me get stuck in straight away. I had the pleasure of sitting in on his client meetings, understanding the process and language used.

Throughout the week I was tasked with drafting and researching different documents such as commercial and residential Contracts, Land Registry Documents and TR1 forms. One of the main tasks I was given was to investigate the documents such as Deeds of Release of Restrictive Covenants closely and compose a list of any enquires before it is sent out to our clients. This highlighted the importance of attention to detail within conveyancing, as even small inconstancies can be significant.

I also gained a good understanding on how different stages of property transactions fit together, from reviewing the Title to exchanging and completing a sale. I found this experience challenging in the best way and it has given me a great appreciation of the hard work that is involved with properties and ownership of land.
