Beyond My Expectations - The Family Law Team

by Jazmine Crouch 16th February 2026

My week started with a tour of the office and a meeting with Head of Family Judith Wheeler to explain the key procedures within family law. Structuring the morning in this way was valuable to me as I was able to actively apply my understanding to different tasks throughout the week.

Over the week I was able to sit in on multiple client meetings. As a postgraduate student I have been taught in a classroom the structure of an interview, however the opportunity to witness real client meetings was invaluable to me to be able learn and grow as an aspiring solicitor. It showed me how personal and emotive family law can be and observing Judith and Louise allowed me to see how their approach varies for different clients and their skills handling sensitive matters.

Following on from this, I had the opportunity to draft attendance notes and court documents allowing me to test out my practical skills. The tasks of reading multiple court bundles and completing court documents provided a true understanding of the procedure in a court and enabled me to see how different every individual case is within family law.

The knowledge I have gained this week has been invaluable, and I am extremely grateful to the team at TFS for giving me this opportunity. However, the thing that stood out to me most was the welcoming and supportive team at Thomas Flavell & Sons, specifically the family team. Although they are all individually extremely busy everyone took the time to answer any questions I had regarding tasks and share their experience working in law with me. They made conscious efforts to give me the most comfortable, informative environment to learn, I am truly grateful for all the time they took to help me during the week.

My experience and lessons at Thomas Flavell & Sons will carry me into my future endeavours in law, my heartfelt thanks goes to everyone in the office. I knew work experience would be beneficial to me, but TFS exceeded my expectations.
