An Enlightening Week of Work Experience at Thomas Flavell & Sons

6th June 2025

A career in the legal sector has always been my dream of mine, and as a first-year Law student, this work experience opportunity has truly enlightened this ambition. Through being able to observe and interact with the talented professionals that practice different aspects of law at this firm, my desire to one day be in the same position has undeniably grown. I was granted the opportunity to explore a variety of departments, such as conveyancing, wills and probate, and family law. This allowed me to profoundly gain an insight into how all the different aspects worked and the significant role that legal professionals play in orchestrating the process.

From the first day, Jamie introduced me to a potential commercial property deal, which I was further tasked to devise an NDA draft to ensure the project remained secret. Furthermore, I gained a valuable awareness into the conveyancing process through Mark’s proficient help, guiding me through crucial steps to completing a purchase, and consistently providing me with useful documents to immerse myself in. Alongside this, April and Izzy both warmly introduced me into the process of completing an invoice, as well as Pardeep allowing me to lead the exchanging of the contracts which was a very exciting task!

I also thoroughly enjoyed learning about the importance of signing a will, through Zara’s outstanding professionalism and passion, and the process of probate being granted. Furthermore, I was able to spend an engaging day with Noel learning about the fascinating world of contentious probate, and having the ability to dive into multiple case files which enabled my understanding, alongside heightening my interest in this practice area due to the significant role Noel played in aiding his clients, and the admirable commitment he had to ensuring those individuals acquired the outcome they deserved.

Furthermore, the family law department welcomed me in and provided me with the foundations of this practice through constructive research questions and a lovely environment to thrive in, with their exceptional talent and genuine approach to what they practice.

Conclusively, I was able to shadow April, Izzy and Zara in client meetings, allowing me to truly appreciate the commitment of building a strong and effective relationship with the clients, and furthermore being able to observe the sensational legal team at work, which was a pleasure.

This week has undoubtedly boosted my drive to pursue law after my studies and will always stick with me as the most unforgettable and meaningful experience.

To all at TFS, thank you again for the privilege of being able to be part of your team.
