Let’s face it - life admin isn’t the most exciting thing to tackle, but getting your paperwork in order can save you and your loved ones a lot of stress down the line. Whether it’s ensuring your Will is up to date or making sure important documents are easy to find, a little organisation now can make a big difference in the future.

Essential Documents to Keep Safe

There are certain documents that everyone should have in place and stored securely. Here are the key ones:

1. Your Will

Your Will ensures that your wishes are carried out after you’re gone. If you haven’t updated yours in a while - or don’t have one at all - it might be time to speak to a solicitor. Life changes, and so should your Will, particularly if you've experienced major life events like marriage, divorce, or the birth of grandchildren.

Did you know: Over half (56%) of UK adults aged 18 and over do not have a Will, including 53% of adults aged 50-64. SOURCE:  maps.org.uk

2. Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

An LPA allows someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so. There are two types: one for health and welfare and one for property and financial affairs. Setting these up while you're in good health ensures that your affairs will be handled by someone you choose, rather than leaving it to the courts.

3. Property and Financial Documents

If you own a home, keep a copy of your title deeds or details of where they are stored. Bank account details, investment records, mortgage or rental agreements, and pension information should also be organised so they can be accessed when needed.

4. Insurance Policies

From life insurance to home and car insurance, having a clear record of your policies will make it easier for your family to locate them when necessary.

5. Medical and Care Preferences

If you have preferences regarding your future medical care, such as a living will (advance decision), make sure this is documented and stored where your family or solicitor can access it.

6. Funeral Plans and Wishes

Thinking about funerals isn’t pleasant, but having a plan in place can relieve your loved ones of making difficult decisions. If you have pre-paid funeral arrangements or specific wishes, note them down.

Where to Store Important Documents

Once you’ve gathered everything, the next step is knowing where to keep it all. Consider the following options:

  • A secure, fireproof box at home, ensuring a trusted family member knows where it is.
  • With your solicitor, particularly for your Will and LPA.
  • A digital backup of non-legal documents on a secure cloud storage service.

Time for a Life Admin Check-Up
